Heart transplants

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Ezekiel 36:26-26

We all understand what a heart of stone feels like because we have experienced it.  Usually, you can immediately identify another person’s heart of stone. People often react with a coldness, with a lack of compassion and the heart of stone is exhibited for all to see.

This lack of compassion is common place and always has been.

An article in Physiology Today says that a strong sense of ego or self often equates with a low level of empathy and compassion. As our beliefs become stronger, the boundaries of our self become stronger, and we find it more difficult to connect with other human beings. We become ‘walled-in’ by the strong structures of our identity.

The Bible teaches a different way.  God’s fix is as physical as taking out your heart of stone and replacing it with a softer heart - one of flesh. A heart that knows how to cry, when to cry, and the empathy behind the tears.

When we see another without compassion, remind them of the compassion that comes from Christ. He gives us a new heart.
